FAQ

Pica8 OpenFlow Switch

How do I access the console port?

All Pica8 switches come with a serial console port and at least one Ethernet management port. Both serial port and Ethernet port use RJ-45 connectors, so you need to pay attention to the fine print on the ports to tell which one is the serial console port (“Con”) and which is the Ethernet management port (“Eth”).

The pin-out of the Pica8 management ports is exactly the same as the Cisco’s. The easiest way to access the serial port is to use an RJ-45 to nine-pin (RS-232 or DB9) female cable. The RJ-45 plugs into the female RJ-45 console port on the switch. The RS-232/DB9 connects directly to a standard PC type serial port.

You can buy this type of cable at PChome and other 3C retailers. Connection settings of the serial port:

  • Baud rate: 115200
  • Data bits: 8
  • Stop bits: 1
  • Parity bits: 0
  • Flow control: none (or xon/xoff)

L2/L3 mode is the proprietary switch software developed by Pica8 that supports traditional switching protocols and OpenFlow. OvS mode is a port of the OpenFlow software switch, www.openvswitch.org, and supports Linux-based virtualization orchestration technology including OpenStack.
